3 Ways to Tell If Your Weight Loss Program Is an Expensive Turd

I have long been of the mind that most weight loss programs don't work. You pay for diet pills, or prepackaged foods and you don't lose weight. Why? Because these are not sustainable fixes to your weight problem. The food either tastes bad or is expensive and you stop buying it and go back to your previous ways of eating because that is what is familiar to you or what is comfortable for the lifestyle that you have chosen. So you spend all this money on weight loss systems and at the end of the day, all you end up with (literally) is an expensive turd.

It doesn't have to be this way. There are diet programs that work and I am going to tell you how to find them. There are three things that you want to look for in an effective weight loss program:

· Lifestyle change

· Sustainability

· Reasonable cost

The primary thing that you want to look for when evaluating a weight loss program is whether the program forces you to make a lifestyle change. By lifestyle change, I mean a weight loss program that incorporates a change to your diet, an increase in your daily activity level and possibly a change to the amount of rest that you're getting each day.

If you want to lose weight permanently, you have to make a lifestyle change. Specifically, you have to decrease your daily caloric intake and increase the number of calories that you are burning each day over the long term. I call this the weight loss equation: fewer calories taken in (times) more calories burned (equals) weight loss. If you just take a weight loss pill or go on a restrictive diet, you may lose weight temporarily but I can virtually guarantee that you will gain it back, plus some, in short order.

In addition to forcing a lifestyle change, you also have to look for a diet program that is sustainable. Diets like the Atkins Diet are not sustainable. How long can you go on eating nothing but sausage and cheese? If you are buying pills to help you lose weight, how long can you afford to buy them? What happens when you stop eating the sausage and cheese or can no longer afford the weight loss pills? If you have not made a modification to your lifestyle, get ready to gain all of that weight back. It is likely that during your rebound you will gain all the weight back and then some.

Have you seen those advertisements that promise you that you can lose 30 pounds in 30 days? Do you really think that is something you can sustain? Think about it, to lose one pound a day you will have to create a caloric deficit of 3500 calories in one day. Do you think that is realistic to expect or sustainable? Diet programs like this are designed to make money.

The shocking headline promises something that you really want - to lose a lot of weight in a short period of time. You are willing to pay for the realization of this dream and they know it so they will take your money in exchange for some false hope. Don't be fooled; I am here to tell you that it simply is not possible to sustain a weight loss program like this.

Finally, cost is a factor and this is where my expensive turd theory comes into play. Nobody likes spending money and if you have to do it to lose weight, the odds are that you are not going to keep doing it. If you have to pay for your weight loss program of choice on a regular basis, such as paying for a subscription or paying for weight loss pills, it is not sustainable.

If you are paying for prepackaged foods and you don't eat them or they don't taste good, you will not lose weight and all you end up with, quite literally, is an expensive turd. Even if you do like the foods, what happens when you stop eating them - if you haven't made a lifestyle change you will gain all of the weight back.
